Miss Lori talks back to school health

Filed under: Miss Lori On Education — misslori @ 2:38 pm

It’s that time of year again, time to send our children back to school. Which means a whole host of visits to your pediatrician, dentist and optomotrist. Wouldn’t it be great if you could take care of all of your needs in one place. With my crazy schedule that is exactly what I need. Well, this Sunday August 30th, 2009 I can do just that at Resurrection Health Care’s Neighborhood Health Festival

AWD is alright with me!

Filed under: Miss Lori's Thoughts — misslori @ 3:06 pm
This week my family and I drove from Chicago to Columbus Ohio. I had meetings scheduled at WOSU and COSI as well as an appearance at the Nationwide Children’s Hospital, plus we were squeezing in a visit with my favorite cousins in New Albany. We weren’t able to leave until late Wednesday afternoon which unfortunately put us in the line of some Summer storms.

Miss Lori’s Wishful Thinking

Filed under: Miss Lori's Thoughts — misslori @ 4:09 pm

I?m feeling wishful today. How about you? In times such as these that are filled with economic stress it is easy to lose site of wishes and dreams because they feel frivolous or completely unattainable. But I feel it is times like these that scream out for wishes. My mother always taught me that a wish can?t come true if you don?t open up your heart and share your wish with the universe. So that?s what I am going to do today, open myself up to the universe. I want to invite you all to join me too. I will start with mine and then you can chime in with yours and we?ll see what we can conjure up in the World. First let?s stipulate that we all wish for World Peace, an end to war, violence, poverty, child and domestic abuse, and a recovery of our economy so that everyone can have a job, a home and healthcare. That said, let?s get to more personal wishes. I encourage you to be as detailed as you can because the more we bring our wishes and dreams into focus the better chance we have at finding a way to bring them true.

Save Me Traverse, My Knight With Shiny Leather!

Filed under: Miss Lori's Thoughts — misslori @ 5:31 pm

Many of you have been writing me wanting to know what?s going on with my household soap opera regarding me & TC (My 2000 Chrysler Town and Country Minivan). Well, it has been dicey around here to say the least. TC keeps trying to force my hand so that I will take him to the mechanic, whom I am absolutely sure he is having an affair with. TC is blowing hot air all the time now and making lots of squeaking and squealing noises, never giving me a moments peace. It?s been such a demanding Summer and it?s not even over. As of today I have had 54 performances since May alone! That?s a lot of traveling. However, driving to all of my concerts every week has been down right blistering hot and painful. TC won?t allow my seat to position me ergonomically anymore so when I get out of the car after the long trip home from one of my events I can barely walk without screaming my back hurts so much.

It?s really frustrating because after my fantasy dalliance with Traverse at Blogher, I had resolved to really put myself fully into my existing relationship with TC, despite the lure of new leather. Economically it?s really hard for anyone to get a separation and forge out into the new World in search of greener pastures these days. Plus, Traverse is such a young buck it would cost a lot of money for me to enter into that relationship solidly, even with the governments? incentive program cash for clunkers.

Family Memories Under The Chicago SKY

Filed under: Miss Lori's Entertainment Picks — misslori @ 5:06 pm

In this difficult economic time being a family of five is extremely costly. I want my children to have fond, whimsical memories of their summer days, but I can?t afford to take them on the Costal vacations that so many of their classmates are enjoying this Summer. So, we are left to make due with our fair city and the surrounding 2hr drive radius. Recently though we were able to find a glorious activity right in our own backyard, a Chicago Sky game at the UIC Pavilion. We were running late as usual so both my husband and I had to drive. I was really worried about paying exhorbatant parking fees, but we easily found free street parking southwest of the site. After jogging the 3 1/2 blocks to the Pavilion we got our tickets at the will call window in very short order. We passed through the gate and entered an arena bustling with energy and excitement. Unlike the few times we have attend games at the United Center, US Cellular Field or Wrigley Field the energy of this pavilion was not all-consuming. As a parent of three school age children I was thankful for the set up being so open and visible. I didn?t feel as though I had to have a body part sewn to each of my children as we made our way to our seats. We were high up, but on the main level. Although from the floor every seat looked to me to be very good and visible.

Miss Lori vs the Brown Dolls

Filed under: Miss Lori Parent to Parent — misslori @ 1:00 pm

A new friend of mine wrote a blogpost today that really echoed my thoughts, Brown Dolls Are Not Enough! She?s right. Painting white dolls brown is not enough. I have been concerned for quite some time about dolls, and how to support a strong self image in my beautiful brown children through toys games and media with the limited items that are available to me as a parent consumer. Although, as bad as it is for me today it was 1000 times worse for my mother raising me in the 70?s. I remember how difficult it was for my mother to find characters and actors that I could look to, and see myself in. It was an ever present source of conversation in our household. My mother was actively fighting for integration in my schools, therefore, I was keenly aware from an early age what diversity was and when it was missing. Sesame Street was so important when I was growing up because it was one off the few shows on television where I could see people like me. Sesame Street gave me the performing bug through their music and artistry, but it was their diversity that empowered me with the belief that I could reach for my dreams.

I grew up and became an actress myself with a sense of greater responsibility planted deep in my soul.

Cease Fire-In honor of National Night Out

Filed under: Miss Lori's Causes — misslori @ 3:36 am

Stop the violence, let us grow
Listen to us you need to know!
Stop the violence, we?re here to say
that being a kid should be okay!

Where is being a kid okay?
Where can I feel free to say?
?Hey World, here I am, just being me,
running and playing, climbing a tree!?
Not on my street will you see such a sight.
Just gangs hanging out waiting for the night.
When darkness falls we have to lock our doors.
That?s when the drive by?s begin and we hit the floor.
They are fighting over turf, drug deals gone sour.
With each new score they gain props and power.
Gangbangers kill each other, take it all in stride.
For only in death do they find meaning for their lives.

Stop the violence, let us grow
Listen to us you need to know!
Stop the violence, we?re here to say
that being a kid should be okay!

Miss Lori’s thought for the day

Just because you don’t act doesn’t mean others won’t react. You’re just as responsible for your inactions as you are for your actions. They all produce consequences.
