Miss Lori says, “JUST WALK!”
October 7, 2009 By Leave a Comment
Today is the International day for walking or biking to school. It really is the launch of entire month?s focus on activity for children. We used to be able to depend on PE classes, recess, and playtime after school for our children to get some good fresh air activity. However, in these paired down, brittle economic times, that is no more. My children get gym once a week and recess is only 15 minutes long a day. Lunch is only 20 minutes, (but that is a whole ?nother soap box for me to preach from). We parents have to be very creative in carving out time for our children to spread their wings and fill their lungs. Walking to school is one way to do that, but it can be prohibitive for some, such as myself. We live too far away to walk to school. Luckily I am in a position to hang out with my kids in the playground after school so that they can release some pent up energy. But I do look for opportunities to take walks with my kids. Beyond just exercise, it is a great way to connect with them. I find that they are more conversational when movement is involved.
So on this International walk to school day I would like to say to you, JUST WALK. Anywhere, anytime that you can. And, lead by example.
