Everyone has bad days. The question is how do you deal with them? What tricks do you employ to pick yourself up. I turn to music. Music has a way of filling in the cracks and crevices of a broken heart and help it beat a little stronger. My favorite music is showtunes. That’s what I grew up on. The theatre is where I feel most at home, so the music gives me great comfort. Growing up my Mom and I would sit at the piano and sing for hours on end, just reveling in the music, and of course the emotions of the stories within the lyrics. Although, I have to admit I had forgotten how powerful that music can be in my life. I have been so busy with family and professional commitments that I hadn’t sung anything but my own songs in quite some time. But recently I discovered a Broadway channel on my radio, and suddenly I was flooded with memories. Memories of shows past, and lyrics still on the tip of my tongue. Then
yesterday, when I wasn’t feeling so great, (I have a sinus infection
coming on), one of my favorite songs came on the air, “Home” from the
Tony Award winning musical In The Heights.
I fell in love with the show in February of 2007 when I happened upon it off Broadway. (I can’t wait to take my kids to see it next month when it comes to Chicago on tour!) The music is so contagious. When the soundtrack came out last Summer I was one of the first to buy it and I played everyday for months. It was my soundtrack for the Summer of 2008. But here in 2009, with the demands of my life at the forefront, music had been relegated to the back seat. But not today. Today the music begged to be not only heard, but sung. I sang out in my car at the top of my lungs, and boy did it feel good. It brought a SMILE to my face that stretched ear to ear, and drew in everyone around me. Because that’s how smiles are, they aren’t just electric, they are magnetic. When you smile at someone they generally smile back. And then, without even realizing it, their moment changes. It gets a ltittle lighter. A little more sunshine breaks through. Face it we could alll use a little more sunshine in our lives these days with the economy as it is. So why not share something that is quick, easy, effective, and best of all, free. Share a smile and you will get the greatest return available in any market today, a full heart.
SMILE On!
