Miss Lori’s Census experience continues; a dramedy in three acts

I have been working for the US Census Bureau for almost two weeks now at a location in Chinatown. I have lived in this community for the last 8 years. I love it, and I am very happy to be able to give back to it. However, at the risk of talking myself out of a job, I have to say that I don’t feel that my actual site is really all that necessary, nor am I the right person to be stationed at it. Why? because I don’t speak Chinese. Yes, I have helped a few people in the ten days I have worked. But most people who truly require assistance have a language issue. I have utilized the language guides that the Bureau provided for me, but mostly I use hand gesture and smiles to make do. Language guides don’t inspire confidence or foster trust. And let’s face it, that’s what my community is really looking for.

These last two weeks have been equal parts boring and ridiculous. Who says government doesn’t support the arts. From my vantage point the Census Bureau is filled with drama. First the comedy. [Read more...]

Miss Lori, day two of Census training; Release the hounds!

Wednesday marked my second and final day of training to become a Questionnaire Assistance Center Representative for the 2010 US Census. It was mercifully shorter and filled with more practical information…eventually. Although the first 30 minutes were back to talking about our own wage form, which had me worried. The second 30 minutes was about safety. Now I think safety is important to talk about for employees, particular employees who are going to interface with the public in transitional spaces. However, It worries me that script included reminding us that we shouldn’t sit in our chair with it tilted to the back, and that we shouldn’t handle electrical equipment with wet hands. Yikes! But don’t worry, the training got better…ish. [Read more...]

Miss Lori’s first day of Census Bureau training

I am doing my part to get Americans counted. I believe so deeply that the 2010 is extremely important to our community that I went and took the test to become a Census representative the first week of January. Last month I was offered the job of Questionnaire Service Center Representative. Yesterday was my first of two days of training.

Day One of my US Census bureau training was uneventful. Oh, it was long, but all we did was fill out forms… together… as a group… very slowly. So slowly that two people actually fell asleep. No, I am serious, they fell asleep. One man was sleeping so deeply that he was snoring. No one really knew what to do about that. [Read more...]

Disney Give a Day, Get a Day program reaches goal of 1 Million volunteers. Keep Going!

Last month I had the great pleasure of attending the Disney Social Media Moms Conference in Orlando, Florida. Our second day of the conference we attended a celebration of volunteerism at Epcot Center. Trucks were rolling out, carrying food to people in need both domestically and in Haiti. But in order for that to happen volunteers were needed to stack cans, seed trees and stuff Ziploc bags with supplies. The most impressive message of the day for me was that every little bit counts. Miss Lori is found on facebook by her birth family

Do you believe in fate. I used to believe strongly that everything happened for a reason. hen some really unexplainable things happened and I kid of fell off the bandwagon. But I still wonder about fate. Never more than now though.

I met Maxine Clark, CEO of Build a Bear Workshop last month at the Disney Social Media Moms conference. We really connected about children. (Big surprise). I then had the great fortune to converse with her by email when I returned home. She and I were bandying about an idea for me to work with her and her husband on a project that they have going in their home town of St. Louis , Missouri. the are working to help young people be healthier. You know that subject is near and dear to my heart. Maxine wanted to know if St Louis was on m radar. I told her that I don’t currently have St Louis on my tour schedule. So we agreed to keep talking till we found the right time to get me there.

The very next day I got a Facebook message…from my sister. No, not the two I have known my whole life, my birth father’s youngest daughter,…my sister. You see, I am adopted. I have known that I was adopted for as long as I have known my name. But this information was an out of the blue smack in the head. My… sister was messaging me because her.. (our) father had passed away the Saturday before, and she wanted me to know about it.( I had to sit down because my head started to spin.) [Read more...]

Miss Lori wants to magnetize your brand at Blogher

So here’s the skinny. If there is anything I have learned from the last year and a half of pro-blogging it’s that you’ll never get anywhere unless you put your ideas out there. l have been an entertainer my whole life, so I am used to putting myself in front of the public, but it took me a moment or two to figure out how to put myself properly in front of businesses. Part of that was because I didn’t believe that I truly had something to offer, from a marketing stand point. But what I have gained more than anything from my time spent in the blogosphere is a clearer sense of marketing, social media and most importantly myself. I’m not just a performer who blogs a little. I am”marketainer”. [Read more...]

Quaker Oats wants you to CrEATe Your Day

I started my day with a very happy tummy this morning thanks to Quaker Instant Oatmeal. When I was a kid I used to eat oatmeal all the time. But it was very plain, (and kind of lumpy to tell you the truth). But lately I have gone back to the future. I have been eating oatmeal, but not my mother’s oatmeal, my children’s oatmeal. Oatmeal of the future. What is oatmeal of the future you ask? It’s whatever you want it to be. You get to CrEATe Your Day. The great folks at Quaker Oatmeal want me to think outside the box and get creative with my oatmeal. [Read more...]
