I am on a campaign this year to be more efficient with my time AND to be more healthy. One truly leads to the other. Because if I use my time more wisely I will get my work done sooner. If I get my work done sooner I will have more time to work out. If I have more time to workout I will rest better. If I rest better I will get deeper sleep. If I get deeper sleep I will wake up with more energy to get my work done…you get the idea. Sort along the lines of; “if you give a mouse a cookie.” Only in my story I don’t give the mouse a cookie I give him a SMOOTHIE. “A smoothie you say Miss Lori?” Why yes, I do. Smoothies are my new secret weapon for achieving my goals. How? Well it’s quite simple really. Smoothies are a quick, easy, and may I say, delicious way to deliver nutrients and valuable protein and fiber in the morning to myself, and more importantly to my children. Breakfast is, after all, the most important meal of the day. It is my chance to arm my kids for a day of what will hopefully be filled with learning. I know that lunch is a crap shoot these days. Not enough time or nutrition there even if I do try and pack a lunch for them myself. So Breakfast is my only shot.
My kids were eating Morning Star soy bacon, Eggo waffles, Honey Nut Cheerios or Go Lean Berry cereal, but it wasn’t enough. Now with my smoothies,I know they are getting exactly what they need to fuel up and drive through to the end of the school day, which ultimately makes them more pleasant to be around, (Heaven help us!) “So, what’s in these magical smoothies?!” Well, I am not sure I would call them magical, but they are pretty AWESOME nonetheless.
I use two different smoothie bases. Yoplait Smoothie mixes that I get at Costco, and Jamba Juice Smoothie Kits that I get at Dominick’s. The Yoplait Smoothies are to be made with skim milk, and the Jamba Juice Mixes are made with, you guessed it, apple juice. For this mornings’ smoothie I used the Razzamatazz Jamba Juice mix. Now the package just says to add apple juice and the contents of the package in the blender and serve. That’s fine, but it not fine enough for me. No, I add flax seed oil and my other secret weapon…Green Super Food. Yes! It’s a little packet that is meant to be mixed in juice all by itself, to give you much needed nutrients like; phytonutrients, enzymes, dietary fiber and essential fatty acids. But I add the packet to my smoothie to give it a nutritional one two punch along side the flax seed oil.
Now I’ll tell you. There was a time when I was juicing green vegetables and then blending the green juice with frozen fruit, flax seed oil and milk. It worked, but the taste was sometimes hit or miss. Plus it was such an exorbitant clean up that I just couldn’t do it that often and get the kids out the door in time for school. But now that I have these premixed pouches, I know what the flavor will be every time, I know what the nutrients there are exactly. And I know my kids are ingesting it because I watch the drinks disappear leaving a delicious smile on their faces in it’s wake. Ga Bing. Ga Bang. Ga Boom. We’re juiced up on nutrition ready to have a productive day that will ultimately lead to better health all around!
As my mother always used to say to me: What kind of a Mommy do you have…A magic Mommy and don’t you forget it.
