Miss Lori is on a mission for National CPR week

DID YOU KNOW sudden cardiac arrests accounted for 62.3 percent among African- Americans; 63.7 percent among whites; and 54.2 percent among Hispanics, according to the Morbidity & Mortality Weekly Report.

DID YOU KNOW African- Americans are almost twice as likely to experience out-of-hospital cardiac arrest than whites, and they are more likely to die from it.

DID YOU KNOW deaths from sudden cardiac arrest increase 10 percent in people between the ages of 15 and 34.  In young women, the death rate increases 30 percent, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

DID YOU KNOW that 80 percent of cardiac arrests occur at home.

DID YOU KNOW 70 percent of Americans may feel helpless to act during a cardiac emergency because they either do not know how to administer CPR or their training has significantly lapsed.

But, DID YOU KNOW anyone can learn how to perform Hands-Only CPR in 60 seconds.

Yes ANYONE!

“This is your mission if you should choose to accept it.”

Last Summer I served as a spokesperson for the AHA Go Red For Women BetterU program. Women all over the country are benefiting from that program everyday; making themselves, and in particular their health, an important priority in their own lives. This year I am teaming up once again with the American Heart Association for your health; yours, your family’s, your kids, your neighbors and strangers on the street.

June 1-7, 2011 has been designated National CPR week and the AHA Go Red For Women foundation and I want you to gear up to save a life. All it will take is 60 seconds. Just 60 seconds of your viewing time to learn how to perform the most important life saving act a bystander can perform, CPR. (Second only to calling 911.)

I AM NOT OK with the fact that African-Americans are almost twice as likely to experience out-of-hospital cardiac arrest than whites, and they are more likely to die from it.

I AM NOT OK with the fact that 70 percent of Americans may feel helpless to act during a cardiac emergency because they either do not know how to administer CPR or their training has significantly lapsed.

I AM NOT OK with those statistics.

The only statistic I am prepared to accept is:

YOUR CHANCES OF SURVIVING A HEART ATTACK DOUBLE IF A BYSTANDER PERFORMS HANDS ONLY CPR

Now those are numbers I can LIVE with!

But this mission isn’t only for you, it’s a team effort. That’s why AHA Go Red For Women and I want you to Tell 5! Tell 5 women you love that they can save a life for the low price of 60 seconds of their time. Go to GoRedForWomen.org to find out how you can encourage 5 women you care about to learn CPR and share the Hands-Only CPR instructional video.

TO help you learn how to perform Hands Only CPR I want to send you your very own AHA Mini Anne doll.

Leave a comment on this post sharing the names of five people you plan to tell about the importance of hands-only CPR.

That’s it! Isn’t that easy?

If you want an extra entry, leave a comment on my own Hands Only CPR singing video. Better yet, make one of your own.

Want additional entries? No problem!

Don’t be a bystander, in life yours or someone else’s. Step up in a cardiac emergency. Learn how to perform Hands-Only CPR in 60 seconds. Make It Your Mission to help save a life with CPR, because the life you save with CPR is most likely to be someone you love.
