Miss Lori is training her rescue dog with the help of Milk-Bone® treats

My dog Swayzee is  a rescue dog. We got him two years ago to help round out our family. He wasn’t the dog we had intend to adopt, the shelter gave that one away before we arrived for our appointment. It was a devastating blow. Through the blur of our tears we chose Swayzee instead. I have to tell you, adopting a dog while freaking is not advisable. We had a really tough time with Swayzee in the beginning. He was too big for my daughters to walk him leaving the responsibility to my son, which made him resentful. Swayzee had a history that we weren’t aware of. But as time passed we realized it must have included starvation, because he was very protective of his food. A bite on my hand taught me that. We tried taking him to obedience training classes, but he would get riled up with the other dogs. It was really awful. But Swayzee was a part of our family, for better or worse, so we just kept trying. Over the course of the past two years we have found a rhythm that is tolerable, but I wouldn’t say that we have found obedience nirvana. That is why I was so happy to get the call from Collective Bias to profile some training treats from Milk-Bone® in their #ILoveMyK9 campaign. Two years in I think both Swayzee and I are ready to go to the next level in our relationship.

First I broke out the treats. LEAN Pup-Peroni Beef flavored treats, Milo’s Kitchen Chicken Jerkey, and Milk-Bone® Crunchy Original Dog Treats. Swayzee was immediately curious., sniffing vociferously.

Then he got impatient and just started barking at the treats as if they could answer him. I ended his torture and commenced our foray into obedience training.

Not only did Swayzee respond well to the treats I think he performed beautifully on camera. Oh dear, another budding performer in my family. Between him and my kids, I will have to retire to become their full time manager just to keep up. Well, maybe not just yet. But if Swayzee and I keep working with the Milk-Bone® treats, perhaps Hollywood will come a calling down the road. A dog can dream can’t he?

We just adopted our puppy  last month and she is also not the dog we intended on bringing home but I definitely think she is the dog we were supposed to have. Swayzee is cute! Love the floppy ear. I’ve got a thing for floppy ears…

What a cutie! Rescue dogs do pose a unique set of challenges, but I think it’s worth it. I’m dealing with a rescue dog now who definitely has some quirks and bad habits, but I think in time that they’ll mostly go away.

Keep up the good work. I think it’s so funny that he loved the camera. My dogs go back and forth between loving the camera and being afraid of it. lol!

He is too darn cute!!  His interest is perfect.  Just about what mine little guy is.  I’ll have to hire him to train my little Chasey….treats interest him as long as they keep coming :-) Hi favorite….Milo’s Kitchen!

Thank you for rescuing!  So many dogs in shelters and in rescue have issues from their past, so they can have a variety of things going on.  Love and patience is what they need.  My Millie has a lot of anxiety.  Good for you for rescuing and sticking to a routine. Most people give up and the poor dogs end of back in the shelter or homeless. :Applause: Great post!
