The calendar says that it’s Spring, but as I look out my window I am thinking Mother Nature didn’t get the memo. OR maybe she is on strike. OR maybe she is frozen somewhere in a snow bank and can’t get free. Wherever she is I miss her, desperately, as I know so many of you living in this prolonged Winter do as well. The fact that the weather isn’t acting, well, seasonably, makes me all the more thankful that I had a little taste of Spring last month as a reprieve from my indentured servitude to winter, my kids, my job… Oh boy, was that my outside voice. Well, I guess the cat is out of the bag so I may as well just speak the truth. (Ok, I know, I always do. Yada, yada.) I have been putting everyone ahead of myself. EVERYONE, for the last, ohhhh I would say…how old am I? How old is my eldest child? Yeah, you get the picture. No lie, for the last 5 years, at least once a week my dear friend has said to me, (sometimes yelled at me), “you have to take some time out for yourself”. I wouldn’t, well, couldn’t, because of many of the very reasons that had me so stressed out in the first place; the collapse of my marriage, loss of health insurance, foreclosure on my house, my childs’ illness, discrimination and bullying issues at my childs’ school… you know, things like that. With all of that on my plate how in the heck could I possibly take any time off for me? Every moment, every waking and sleeping moment was spent putting out fires, completing work tasks trying to drum up new business and fighting off the debt collecting wolves at the gate. Rest was not an option.

Then along came my friends at Blogher and a brand party with South Walton. The party was a blast. I didn’t win any of the raffle prizes, but I had a lovely time. I was so impressed with the party that I wrote about it as a template. Because I couldn’t stop talking about South Walton they took notice and last Fall they awarded me a Blogger In Residence trip. At first I was thrilled and then I was daunted. Who would I have to go with.  I couldn’t afford to pay for my kids to fly with me. I was finally in the process of divorcing my husband, and even though I have been separated since 2009 I have not ventured into the world of dating, so no love connection. And almost all of my friends are married with kids and couldn’t get away with a getaway. The thought of going by myself made me sick to my stomach with sadness. I was afraid of being lonely on a vacation. So, I dragged my feet. I mean really dragged them. The poor South Walton team was so patient with me, but I am sure they wanted to put my face on a dart board at times. Up to the very last minute I wasn’t 100% sure I would get on that plane. But my sense of professional duty overpowered my fear, (it always does), and I made my way to Midway airport to begin my journey on Southwest Airlines to South Walton, Florida. (I must admit the fact that it was 9 degrees made my decision to go a bit more resolute.)

Next Stop #SouthWalton #MLTVvacay

When I arrived in the sunshine state all of the cabbies at the airport were hugging themselves in down parkas as I was ripping the clothes from my body, so overwhelmingly thrilled to experience the 50 degree increase in air temperature from frozen Chicago, but that was just the beginning of the gifts of my trip.

I found something in Florida that I hadn’t really understood was missing. I found me. I found a peaceful sense of self. Sure it was ultimately only a 4 day glimmer, but that reminder gave me hope. Something that I was desperately out of. I came back to frozen Chicago my hair a little lighter, my skin a little browner, my blood pressure a little lower and my smile a whole lot wider. And for all of that I am eternally grateful.

Stop and smell the vegetation #MLTVvacay

You know what you do with gratitude. You pay it forward. That’s why…drum roll please… I am thrilled to announce the Miss Lori South Walton #MLTVvacay Giveaway! Thanks to South Walton’s commitment to social community engagement I am giving away a trip like mine to one lucky person in as dire a need for a vacation as I was.

  11. I can’t tell you the last time I’ve had a real vacation. Because of my job, summer time is my busiest time so it’s hard for me to get away. My son usually goes on vacation with my parents so I’d love to be able to go somewhere with just us two!

  12. You know it does sound very scary to embark on such a trip all by myself. I’ve never done anything without someone being there. It sounds like you were really able to find yourself, something I think a lot of us, men and women…forget to remember. Perhaps in all the hustle and bustle we just forget. I know like many, I’m a stay at home mom who nanny’s part time, full time volunteer at my boys’ school everyday and also volunteer for Cub Scouts, I’m a Den Mother. Plus there’s the normal things like dishes(HOW I LOATHE THEE..lol) laundry, homework, dinner and if there’s enough energy left a shower! 😉 lol You give so many people the light, showing anyone can make things possible! You are an awesome role model, I can only hope I’m doing things right for me, for my family and my community :) Congrats to you Lori ??

  13. Watching your trip through social media looked incredibly refreshing. Congrats as you start doing more for you. I honestly cannot wait until the next time I have a chance to hug you in person.
