Miss Lori is searching for a good education and some Perspective

Today I am going over to the Fox studios to tape an episode of Perspective with Monique Caradine, for My 50 Chicago. The last time I was on the show we discussed Black History Month. Today we are going to talk education. Yes, education. That seems to be on a lot of peoples minds this week. Over on NBC they have named this week Education Nation. Just yesterday on Sunday I watched Secretary of Education Arne Duncan on Meet the Press with David Gregory, and yesterday morning on The Today Show I watched President Obama admit that his daughters wouldn’t be able to receive the same quality level of education in a DC public school as they are in their private school. Apparently he felt the same way when he lived her in Chicago, because the girls attended private school here too. I don’t blame him though. [Read more...]

Miss Lori says being a M.O.M. is a project she’s been cast in for life

YouTube Preview ImageMy name is Miss Lori and I’m a MOM; A Merrily Optimistic Multi-Tasker, who when life hits her square between the eyes can flip over and become “A Weary Overwhelmed Woman,” (W.O.W.). I’m a real Miss Lori, I don’t just play one on TV. (I have a purse full of fruit snacks and autograph cards to prove it!) I live a very surreal life, equal parts glamor and soot, but always very real. My career is in entertainment. I perform live all over the country, and I also appear on television. In addition I leverage my celebrity to strengthen bonds between brands and consumers using my own design of “Marketainment”.  At the same time I’m the mother of 3 beautiful children grappling with a failed economy and a flawed marriage. Some days have started standing in line at the Department of Health and Social Services, and ended dipping chocolate covered strawberries in champagne with fellow bloggers and brand reps. It can make my head spin. But no matter the situation I always aim to address life with a SMILE. That’s a big part of what I am known for, my SMILE. SMILES are powerful and very contagious. I’m proud of the joy and empowerment that I cultivate with my work both online and IRL one smile at a time. [Read more...]

Miss Lori says Goodbye to PBS Kids, but not to YOU!

For the last three years I have had the distinct honor to grace your televisions in the mornings as you get ready for school, for work, or a day of play at home. It?s been an absolute treat for me to do what I have been doing, what I have a complete passion for, in front of the viewing public.

So many parents have shared their personal stories with me over the years about how my presentations on PBS Kids helped their children discover talents or make new connections in thought, moving further along the road of discovery. I consider it an absolute privilege being a part of so many ?lightbulb? moments with parents and their young developing children. ?Miss Lori? is not a character that I play, it is the real life that I live. Miss Lori is me, a Mom first and foremost. I use my talents and abilities to help children and their families better their health and wellness, improving their lives overall. It is not only my mission, but my genuine passion.

Last Friday marked my final appearance on the PBS Kids Preschool Block, the series of interstitials in between shows such as Curious George, Super Why, Clifford and more, which I helmed for three years.

And They All Fall Down; The domino effect of children and the recession

Dominoes are a great children?s game. Although when I was a kid I never new how to play it by the rules, but I used to love to line them up and watch the snaking patterns topple over one by one. That was fun! However, watching the domino effect of today?s failing economy is not. This recession isn?t childs? play, but children are certainly at the heart of it. Children are innocent of any blame for our current predicament, and yet they will shoulder most of the burden from the vestiges of this recession for years to come.

This week SV Mom Blogers across the Nation and in Canada had a unique opportunity to converse with the face of CBS Nightly News, Katie Couric. She told us about the new CBS series Children of the Recession, and how this unprecedented coverage came about. She said it was Dr Irwin Redliner, co-founder of the Children?s Health Fund, who first approached her about doing a network wide report about children and how they are affected by the recession. She was immediately hooked on the idea and went straight to Sean McManus, head of CBS. Sean gave the green light and the network was off and running.
