Musings From My Minivan
From November 2008 to March 2011 my heart was aching. My heart was aching because my youngest child was sick and no one could figure out why or how to make it better. [Read more...]
I was in the doctors office a week ago and there was the usual assortment of months old magazines for my entertainment. I picked up a December 2011 TIME magazine and came across a curious story about Chrysler’s revival. Like most Americans I was aware of the auto industry bailouts that occurred a couple of years ago. But also like most Americans I hadn’t really taken the time to learn the details. Having spent a lot of time this last year profiling cars for GM and Chrysler, I have improved my knowledge on the subject of cars inside and out. [Read more...]
I purposely have stayed away from the show Toddlers and Tiaras because, well frankly, I know my head would just explode if I watched even one scene. But my friend Kris Cain, aka @LittleTechGirl sent me a press notice about interview availability with Dr Tim Kimmel, of FamilyMatters.net, to talk about protecting girls from negative media influences. Now such a topic is exactly as Kris said in her email to me, “right up my alley”. I am always on my soap box protesting the sexualization of children. But the reason this particular media alert was going out right now is because of a 30 million dollar lawsuit that the mother of Isabella Barrett, (apparently a famous contestant on TLC’s Toddlers and Tiaras), filed against TMZ, The Huffington Post and Daily Mail Online for sexualizing her 5 year old daughter. If you are familiar with my efforts you know that I am desperately focused on increasing the overall health and wellness of children and their parents. One important piece of armor in this fight is physical activity. A great way to get an abundance of that is to have your child participate in organized sports. [Read more...]
If you are on social media or listening to any news program, in the Chicagoland area in particular, you have probably heard about the viral youtube video of a 17 year old boy being savagely beaten and robbed by a gang of teens in the Bridgeport area. It got millions of views before youtube pulled it down…TWICE. I was not one of those millions of views. (However, I do applaud the people who watched and immediately reported the video to the police.) [Read more...]
President Barrack Obama is the embodiment of Dr Martin Luther King Jr’s “I Have a Dream” speech in Washington DC, August 28, 1963. On October 16th, 2011 President Barrack Obama made a speech of his own at the dedication of the newly installed Martin Luther King Jr Memorial in DC. My children and I were there for this historic event. [Read more...]
When you think of Walgreens you probably think of prescriptions, photo processing, or cosmetics. I also think of late night trips for last minute supplies for school projects, and quick snacks on the run. There’s a new Walgreens though, a flagship store on State Street in Chicago that might change your mind. Well, it’s a new store, but Walgreens is not new to the area it used to be right there, in the very same spot, from the 1920′s to 2005. But even though Walgreens was a staple in the community for decades, this store doesn’t scream dusty history, it screams shiny innovation Don’t take my word for it, take a look for yourself. When you see these pictures from the #ChiWalgreens store opening event like this, [Read more...]
I shop all the time for my kids, for my job, for my parents, even occasionally for myself, but this week I made an extra special shop for my dog. Collective Bias gave me the opportunity, or should I say shoppertunity, to try out some new doggy training treats from Milk-Bone®. [Read more...]

One of the hardest tasks I have every day is feeding my children afterschool. It is a monumental task because my children are absolutely ravenous when school lets out. If I don’t get them fed immediately they start gnawing on each other, and that can make a mother want to pull her hair out by the roots. [Read more...]
