Miss Lori says even in a Recession Disney World is still magical

Disney kids This is an original CHICAGOMOMSBLOG post from February 2010. I’m re-posting today in honor of all of my friends heading to #Disneysmmoms this week; It will be magical, I know it!  And to all of my friends who aren’t going to Disney; there’s always next year!

Ever since my daughter’s illness last year my family’s financial situation has been on life support. Paycheck to paycheck, there simply isn’t enough for living. We are scraping all sides of the barrel and underneath. (Not unlike a lot of families out there.) Trying to maintain some sense of normalcy for your kids in the midst of a financial nightmare is no small task. My kids are aware of the reality of our lives, but they are kids, so I don’t want to rob them of all the fantastical magic of childhood. That’s why when Disney came a knockin’ I answered the door. Miss Lori offers 8 tips to keep your kids safe at big events Like The Chicago Auto Show

The Chicago Auto Show is an event that I look forward to every year. I have been taking my kids to it since they were in the womb, literally. I attended my first first look for Charity Chicago Auto Show event when I was pregnant with my first child. Now that’s a lot of firsts. One first associated with the Auto Show for me is the first, (and only) time my eldest daughter ever got lost was at the Chicago Auto Show. She was just 4 years old. [Read more...]

Miss Lori offers 3 tips to make the Superbowl fun for kids too!

Many adults are excited to watch the Superbowl this weekend, just like I am. However, the big game isn’t such a big deal for little one’s. So how do football fan parents coexist with play doh fan kids? I suggest three things: [Read more...]

Miss Lori says Let’s Dream

I wasn’t but a few feet out of my house in Chinatown walking the dog before this song jumped into my head. I was so afraid that I would forget it that I had to make a quick video. It was really difficult balancing the leash and the video phone, but I managed. Well almost. The dog did yank me hard during the final note, but I stayed on pitch and in frame! But I need your help now, I need to finish the song. What lyrics do you think I should add?

Miss Lori goes home with her first Wordless Wednesday

In 2011 I have decided to try a few new things that are new. Well, new to me. Wordless Wednesday. For my first foray into this well regard style of posting I am going to go home. I think it’s the perfect post for this week following the holidays. Like many I went home for Christmas. Looking around my parent’s house I saw myself, in a different, yet very familiar light. I gotta tell you, I took Christmas present giving for granted most of my life, and I didn’t even know it. I always assumed that I would have the ability to buy at least a modicum of what I wanted to for the people that I care for. Nothing outrageous mind you. I’ve never enjoyed a limitless bank account, but I have always been able to provide, or be provided for. That is until last Christmas. [Read more...]

This Summer for the third year in a row I performed my AWESOME Heath and Playstory time shows on the WTTW PBS-Kids Great Food Fan Van Summer tour. It’s something that I really look forward to, but it’s also something that really wears me out. I did 50 shows this Summer, (and that didn’t even include the many Miss Lori’s CAMPUS Concerts that I also performed around the country). My tour shows are two hour concert style musicals performed outside. I don’t mean outside under a tent, I mean outside under the naked sun. Which is sweaty! I sweat like nobody’s business, burning a lot of energy with each song and dance. That’s why it’s extremely important that I replenish my electrolytes and my energy supply in between sets. Thankfully this Summer we had some fantastic Chicago based sponsors who supplied healthy eats for every show; Square One Organics, Nature’s Hand GoNola and Lifeway-Kefir yogurt. The samples they had out not only kept the audience happy, they kept me going.

My concerts aren’t just about entertainment, they are an education as well. One of the lessons that I impress upon my fans is how important it is to replace the fluids and electrolytes you loose when you are engaged in active play. My shows are interactive so I am not the only one sweating during the performance, my audience “activates to be great” as well. Which is wonderfully healthy. However, temperatures in Chicago this past Summer soared often in the high 90′s, and even broke a few 100′s, which meant we all lost a lot of fluids with each song. So after every couple of songs I and my fans would have a few spoonfuls of Square One Organics Superfood. “Isn’t that a baby food Miss Lori? Are you kidding me?” I kid you not. Square One Organics is not just for baby’s, it’s a Superfood, full of important electrolytes, crucial for me when performing my high energy shows for sure.  Plus their gluten free, frozen puree is refreshing and delicious.

Electrolytes are important, but I also need fuel. During song breaks I would turn to GoNola and Lifeway-Kefir. When I combine the Nature’s Hand GoNola along with Lifeway-Kefir yogurt, and some fresh fruit, I have all the protein, carbohydrates and anitoxidants that I need to kick start my afterburners during my muscle pumping performances. On top of that, thanks to Lifeway-Kefir yogurt, I also gain much needed probiotics to help me digest my snacks properly during the show. The antioxidants also give me extra protection keeping me healthy and strong helping me survive my grueling schedule, and come out smiling!

The best part of all of this for me is that all three companies, Square One Organics, Nature’s Hand and Lifeway-Kefir are Chicago based, small businesses, giving back to their community. Not only are they providing us with great products, but with attentive service, and commitment to excellence. They, like so many other small businesses, are the backbone of our society. I am proud…and full.

What are some of your favorite small business? Please include a link to their website and introduce us to their products in a comment below. Let’s support our small businesses this Saturday and every day.

Miss Lori suggests 8 things to do if your child is a victim of cyberbullying

The world wide web is a wondrous place, full of infinite possibilities for communication and progress. That’s the Ying side. The Yang side is darker and full of malice. Last school year my family experienced the Yang effect when one of my children was the victim of cyberbullying. We were stunned and unprepared. But that didn’t last long. Instinct took over and I acted. We were completely successful in shutting down the bully. Today I want to share a list of recommendations I have if you have to deal with a similar threat.
