Miss Lori is going to the Chicago Craftsman Blogger event with her own DIY todo list

Friday I will be spending my entire day learning how to not only do  DIY projects myself, but do them efficiently, safely, and right the first time. I am joining many a handful of other bloggers, (much more handy than I), in downtown Chicago at the Craftsman Experience, for a full day of power tool infused activities. I am really excited, because this will be a day of learning and I love to learn. Even better I need to learn because I have a serious punch list of projects to get my house ready for sale. In this economy we all need to be DIY savvy, so I won’t be wasting anytime at the Craftsman experience. I will show up ready to go with my project wishlist in hand. Here are some pictures of things I want to learn to take care of myself. [Read more...]

Miss Lori is cruising the Chicago River all the way home

I have lived in Chicago for almost 20 years and I have never before taken a River Cruise. It’s not like I didn’t know about them. Every Summer I hear the music from the more festive cruises right from my kitchen window. Yes, I live facing the Chicago River. Crazy right? Well now, I can finally say I have cruised the river thanks to my friend and author Melisa Wells.

In honor of Melisa’s new book release “Chicken in The Car and The Car Won’t Go” I got to take my very first Chicago River Cruise. It was a perfect fit considering Melisa’s book is all about Chicago activities. Over 200 to be exact. Particular perfect adventures for families with tweens and teens. (Hey that’s me!) Inspired by her book I am having my kids page through all of Melisa’s suggestions and create a wish list of adventures for us to embark upon this Summer. (I love a good plan!)

What am I doing consulting a Chicago tourist guide? Well, this a is a big city. Just because I have lived here for the last 20 years doesn’t mean I know everything. My kids would say I only know the venues I have performed at. They might be right! But not anymore! Thanks to Melisa’s book I aim to be an informed Chicagoan-a fun master if you will. And you can be too. Just pick up a copy and put together your own plan to cruise this fabulous city. From the River to the roadways, there is so much for us all to explore.

Miss Lori lists five things you should not do with a cellphone at your ear

I swear I saw five separate people do these things this week and I just had to write it down. Here are five things I don’t think you should do with a cellphone at your ear. ( I mean the actual phone, not an ear piece.) Please feel free to add to the list. [Read more...]

Chicago post blizzard streets are no match for Miss Lori and a Chevy Cruze

Did you hear about the Chicago blizzard of 2011? Oh it was just a couple of flurries…Yeah right! It was HUGE! Once the winds settled it was time for the Chicago to dig out. Some had a bigger job than others. [Read more...]

Miss Lori says you are powerful even when Living with NonCents

It is the beginning of the month a particularly tough time for those of us Living with NonCents. Too many bills, and not enough money to go around. This time of the month can really stress you out, causing you to pull inward out of anxiety, shame, and fear. I get it. But you are a survivor, which means you are a fighter too. I want you to fight that depression and resist the instinct to revert inward. Instead I want you to reach outward. [Read more...]

Miss Lori says Let’s Dream

I wasn’t but a few feet out of my house in Chinatown walking the dog before this song jumped into my head. I was so afraid that I would forget it that I had to make a quick video. It was really difficult balancing the leash and the video phone, but I managed. Well almost. The dog did yank me hard during the final note, but I stayed on pitch and in frame! But I need your help now, I need to finish the song. What lyrics do you think I should add?

Miss Lori’s Census experience continues; a dramedy in three acts

I have been working for the US Census Bureau for almost two weeks now at a location in Chinatown. I have lived in this community for the last 8 years. I love it, and I am very happy to be able to give back to it. However, at the risk of talking myself out of a job, I have to say that I don’t feel that my actual site is really all that necessary, nor am I the right person to be stationed at it. Why? because I don’t speak Chinese. Yes, I have helped a few people in the ten days I have worked. But most people who truly require assistance have a language issue. I have utilized the language guides that the Bureau provided for me, but mostly I use hand gesture and smiles to make do. Language guides don’t inspire confidence or foster trust. And let’s face it, that’s what my community is really looking for.

These last two weeks have been equal parts boring and ridiculous. Who says government doesn’t support the arts. From my vantage point the Census Bureau is filled with drama. First the comedy. [Read more...]

Miss Lori, day two of Census training; Release the hounds!

Wednesday marked my second and final day of training to become a Questionnaire Assistance Center Representative for the 2010 US Census. It was mercifully shorter and filled with more practical information…eventually. Although the first 30 minutes were back to talking about our own wage form, which had me worried. The second 30 minutes was about safety. Now I think safety is important to talk about for employees, particular employees who are going to interface with the public in transitional spaces. However, It worries me that script included reminding us that we shouldn’t sit in our chair with it tilted to the back, and that we shouldn’t handle electrical equipment with wet hands. Yikes! But don’t worry, the training got better…ish. [Read more...]

Miss Lori’s first day of Census Bureau training

I am doing my part to get Americans counted. I believe so deeply that the 2010 is extremely important to our community that I went and took the test to become a Census representative the first week of January. Last month I was offered the job of Questionnaire Service Center Representative. Yesterday was my first of two days of training.

Day One of my US Census bureau training was uneventful. Oh, it was long, but all we did was fill out forms… together… as a group… very slowly. So slowly that two people actually fell asleep. No, I am serious, they fell asleep. One man was sleeping so deeply that he was snoring. No one really knew what to do about that. [Read more...]
