Miss Lori has a gut feeling about Maxine Clark and St Louis, MO.

Do you believe in fate? I have to admit that I have wanted to, but my life hasn’t really rolled along like that. However, I do believe in gut instinct. Although, truth be told I believe it to be a muscle that you have to learn to exercise properly. I have always had “feelings,” but I haven’t always known how to listen to them, or to act upon them. This year I have had a recurring notion happening in my life. (Well, I have had a lot of them, but only one appears to be particularly positive.) Wait, I should back up to the beginning…last year.

My daughter has been struggling with an illness for a while now, but she has yet to be diagnosed. She has an enlarged pancreas but no one can seem to figure out why. It’s been excruciating emotionally, watching her struggle so. Particularly during the holidays last year. What made it worse was that with the piling up of medical bills money was really tight. For my beautiful daughter the one wish I had for her, beyond having her get better, was to be able to take her to Disney World. I wished it deep in my bones. I spoke it every night. I told the World. I put it out there, even though I had no possible way of fulfilling such a dream. Well, that is until I got a fateful email from Disney inviting me to be a part of the first Disney Social Media Moms Conference. And just like that a dream was fulfilled. Okay, but this is where the fate thing starts actually. (And you thought this was just going to be about my daughter? Who by the way is doing, better but still hasn’t been diagnosed and still suffers daily.) While attending the #Disneysmmoms conference I had the unique opportunity to not only meet, but hear an absolutely phenomenal woman speak. Maxine Clark, CEO of Build a Bear Workshop. Listening to her story, to her ideas about children, and community, and responsibility, and friendship… well I fell in love right then and there. No, I’m serious I started drawing her name in my notebook with little hearts around it. (Wait, strike that. I don’t want to get arrested for stalking). Okay, but it’s true that I was absolutely enamored. The little voice inside of me said, You are going to work with this woman!” Well, actually it wasn’t just the little voice inside of me, it was the big voice outside of me too. Because I told Maxine plainly that I absolutely wanted to work with her somehow, someway. I wrote about it, I tweeted it, I updated my facebook status about it. Well heck, I had such great success giving my dream up to the universe before, why stop now. [Read more...]

Disney Give a Day, Get a Day program reaches goal of 1 Million volunteers. Keep Going!

Last month I had the great pleasure of attending the Disney Social Media Moms Conference in Orlando, Florida. Our second day of the conference we attended a celebration of volunteerism at Epcot Center. Trucks were rolling out, carrying food to people in need both domestically and in Haiti. But in order for that to happen volunteers were needed to stack cans, seed trees and stuff Ziploc bags with supplies. The most impressive message of the day for me was that every little bit counts. Build a Bear Workshops’ Maxine Clark says kindness is at the heart of business and bears

About 3 years ago my family and I made a vacation of our city of Chicago during Spring Break. It was a lot of fun. The highlight for the kids was the day we spent at Navy Pier, most of which was done in the Build A Bear store. We had never been there before, mostly because it seemed a little pricey for our monthly budget, but this was special. So, we went, and all three of my kids made a special friend. It was a great time. A lasting memory for us all, but especially for my youngest. That day a friendship was born that would stand the test of time, doctors and hospitals.

This story is not unfamiliar to Maxine Clark, CEO and founder of Build A Bear Workshop. I had the pleasure of hearing Maxine speak recently at The Disney Social Media Moms Conference. She shared her very personal, and inspirational story behind the creation of her corporate phenomenon. But Build a Bear Workshop is not your typical International company, because what Build A Bear runs on is kindness, compassion and dreams fulfilled. [Read more...]

At Disney Guy Kawasaki said company’s are listening-are you loud enough to be heard?

This past week I had the pleasure of attending the Disney Social Media Moms conference at Disney World. Our first speaker was the Twitter-infamous Guy Kawasaki. He had many suggestions about how to improve our marketing strategies by maximizing our Twitter presence. But the loudest lesson I learned from Guy was that companies are listening. Listening to what you ask? Why us. They are listening to our tweeting, posting, updating and complaining. Guy gave some examples of high powered companies that were listening and reacting to his tweets of distress, admitting that his experience may not be the norm. But you know what, somebody is listening to me too. In preparation for #disneysmmoms I did something for me. Highly unusual. But I had a gift certificate that I hadn’t used, so I decide to live a little. I ordered two Yummie Tummie tanks. (For all you 6 pack women out there this is what we mommies use to put our kangaroo pouches back in check), I figured what better place to have a Yummie Tummie than at a conference in Disney World where everyone is going to constantly be taking pictures and videos. So, I placed my order. It cost about $36 more than my gift certificate, but I still felt really good and excited.

Then the next day I saw a tweet with a discount code for 20% off a Yummie Tummie order. Aw rubber nuggets! I just placed mine yesterday. I tweeted my lament and then went on about my day. Well, you know what? Somebody was listening. And not just anybody, Nicole from Clever Girls Collective and Yummie Tummie! [Read more...]

Miss Lori says the movie The Spy Next Door is safe for your kids.

My children and I, plus two other families, had the great fortune to go and see a pre-screening of the movie The Spy Next Door. (I received free tickets through my association with ChicagoMomsblog.com, and I also won several through MomsLikeMe.com Win It Weekend.) We had 10 kids in tow, ages 7-12, and 3 Moms. A very diverse group. First off I can tell you that we all enjoyed ourselves. No painful groans at the end of the movie. No whining wanting to know, “Why did you drag me to see this?!” Everyone came out of the movie happy that we went in. It was kid safe, it was funny, and it was the right length.

For many parents I know that?s absolutely all you need to hear. So you don?t have to read any further. Just gather your kids and head to the theatre when the movie opens January 15. End of story.

For others of you who have an interest in an artistic review, here we go.
