I remember growing up hearing my parents and their friends talk about where they were when John F. Kennedy was shot, and when Martin Luther King Jr marched on Washington. They were just words for me. Notions. I didn’t feel any personal connection because they weren’t my memories. Nevertheless, they did color my World. [Read more...]
Miss Lori has an eleventh set of thanks and wishes for her birthday she hopes will keep driving forward
I am counting down my blessings for the last fourteen days of being 40 and counting up my wishes for my year as 41. This coupling is about being true to who you are as a professional, not standing in the way of your own creativity, and being very clear about not just what you want in life, but what you need. NHTSA postpones backup camera proposal to Congress
I am behind the wheel of another car this week, the Chevy Equinox. It comes with a navigation system complete with a rear view backup camera.
The very same type of camera that The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, (NHTSA), had proposed to require be installed in all new cars by 2014. But after a flood of over 200 public comments expressing concern they have postponed their charge to Congress. [Read more...]
Miss Lori says you are powerful even when Living with NonCents
It is the beginning of the month a particularly tough time for those of us Living with NonCents. Too many bills, and not enough money to go around. This time of the month can really stress you out, causing you to pull inward out of anxiety, shame, and fear. I get it. But you are a survivor, which means you are a fighter too. I want you to fight that depression and resist the instinct to revert inward. Instead I want you to reach outward. [Read more...]
Miss Lori finds CEDA’s LIHEAP program helps families Living with NonCents
For my first Living with NonCents post I want to profile a local grant program in Chicago that many people aren’t taking advantage of, even though they could. It comes from the Community for Economic Development Association for Cook County, or CEDA. It’s their Low Income Heating Energy Assistance Program, (LIHEAP). It is a one time grant to help families offset their heating and cooling costs. [Read more...]
Miss Lori’s new series, “Living with NonCents”
In light of all of the confusion and fear families are feeling as a result of our failed economy I have decided to start a new series here on MissLori.TV called “Living with NonCents”. Since, quite frankly, that’s what it feels like often, that we are not only living with no CENTS, but also many people out there are acting like they have no SENSE. [Read more...]
Miss Lori says, Dear World, what’s going on?
I’m known as a multi-faceted artist on Miss Lori’s CAMPUS and MissLori.TV, but I think of myself as a mother, daughter, sister, friend and community member. Like so many others these days I am plagued with the question, “what’s going on in our World today”. Having traversed my own personal struggles with the broken healthcare system, high mortgage interest rates, diminished real estate market and a failed economy I know all too well the intense fear that citizens are living with on a daily basis. To help process my own feelings I am expressing myself through my original song Dear World.

Miss Lori isn’t Waiting for Superman anymore, and neither should you
When I was at the second annual Blogalicious conference in Miami over Columbus Day weekend I had the distinct honor of attending a screening of the much talked about documentary, Waiting For Superman, (thanks to the dynamic Philly duo behind the PR company Different Drummer.) It had a profound impact on me as a social media influencer, a children’s advocate and especially as a mother. [Read more...]
Miss Lori wonders where the honor is in Don’t Ask Don’t Tell
As a parent it’s important for me to teach my children moral values, and to instill in them qualities that will not just make them successful, but better people. Things like manners, honesty and honor. But I gotta tell you, our government is making that very difficult these days. “The Government you say?” Yes, the government. Recently there has been a lot of chatter about the Don’t Ask Don’t Tell policy in the military. As a result, my children wondered what exactly the policy is. I explained to them that Don’t Ask Don’t Tell is a policy that was put into place 17 years ago. It requires men and women to hide their true sexual orientation in order to serve their country. “That doesn’t seem very nice Mommy,” my 7 year old remarked. (Out of the mouths of babes.) But she is right, it isn’t very nice. DADT forces inherently honorable people to be dishonorable by lying about who they are at heart, just to have the honor of serving their country, a service that is honorable. (Very confusing.) Miss Lori’s Census experience continues; a dramedy in three acts
I have been working for the US Census Bureau for almost two weeks now at a location in Chinatown. I have lived in this community for the last 8 years. I love it, and I am very happy to be able to give back to it. However, at the risk of talking myself out of a job, I have to say that I don’t feel that my actual site is really all that necessary, nor am I the right person to be stationed at it. Why? because I don’t speak Chinese. Yes, I have helped a few people in the ten days I have worked. But most people who truly require assistance have a language issue. I have utilized the language guides that the Bureau provided for me, but mostly I use hand gesture and smiles to make do. Language guides don’t inspire confidence or foster trust. And let’s face it, that’s what my community is really looking for.
These last two weeks have been equal parts boring and ridiculous. Who says government doesn’t support the arts. From my vantage point the Census Bureau is filled with drama. First the comedy. [Read more...]
