Back in 1991 I graduated from the Boston Conservatory, Cum Laude, with a BFA focusing on Musical Theatre. I didn’t start off at Boston Conservatory, and though I had graduated from high school 4 years earlier I did not in fact goto college for the full four years. Oh, don’t get me wrong, I did the work. I just did it faster, and in some cases all at once. Plus I received life credits for “work” in my field that I did outside of school, such as the National Tour of The Mystery of Edwin Drood, stage managing A Christmas Carol, choreographing and staring in Cinderella, and performing in an opera, a Cole Porter revue, The Rep production of Woman In Mind and more. If I was in college now I never would have had to pause while I was in a show. Even while on tour I would simply be able to just take courses online. It’s actually something I’ve really wanted to do for years now. I have often fantasized about getting a Master’s in Child Psychology, Education or something like that. Why haven’t I done it already? Well, I have three kids, a house, a dog and a business, (Oh that lil thing?). They all need my full attention, not to mention my financial support. I just haven’t been able to justify assigning extra funds towards the pursuit of an extra degree. Well, that may not be an issue any longer, at least not for five lucky learners. [Read more...]

Miss Lori, day two of Census training; Release the hounds!
Wednesday marked my second and final day of training to become a Questionnaire Assistance Center Representative for the 2010 US Census. It was mercifully shorter and filled with more practical information…eventually. Although the first 30 minutes were back to talking about our own wage form, which had me worried. The second 30 minutes was about safety. Now I think safety is important to talk about for employees, particular employees who are going to interface with the public in transitional spaces. However, It worries me that script included reminding us that we shouldn’t sit in our chair with it tilted to the back, and that we shouldn’t handle electrical equipment with wet hands. Yikes!
