Miss Lori says teach your kids to ACTIVATE Summer all year long

I’m getting ready for my fourth annual WTTW PBS Kids Summer Great Food Fan Van tour. I love touring in the Summer because it feels so good to be outside and active. But one of the lessons I try to teach kids during the Summer is that you can be active healthy and fit during any season of the year. [Read more...]

Miss Lori fell off the Mamavation track this week and lost sleep

So, this week was trouble. I was supremely stressed filling out financial aid applications filing corporate taxes, prepping my 2010 taxes, you sense a money theme here? Yup, that’s what stresses me most, money. The problem for me is that when I have to immerse myself in my personal and professional finances the numbers take over my brain and it’s extremely hard to turn it off. Do you ever have that problem? So what does any of this have to do with Mamavation, losing weight and the price of beans? Well, sleep is an integral part of a health plan. Yes, you heard me, SLEEP. It was stress and a complete lack of sufficient sleep that got me into this metabolic mess in the first place. [Read more...]

Miss Lori Go Red BetterU week 10: know your history, know your choices

I have a question for all of you parents out there. Please raise your hands all of you who hope your children will grow up and put themselves last on the priority list regarding health. Go ahead, don’t be shy. What? No hands? Oh, you think I’m being ridiculous? But wait a minute, that’s exactly what we’ve been doing by running around at wit’s end ignoring our health, skipping checkups, avoiding yearly screenings. We are teaching our children that it’s not possible to grow up and take care of yourself and your family at the same time. The moral of this little exercise, if we want to be good parents we have to be good to ourselves.

So guilt aside how do we do that? Well that’s exactly what we’ve been working on. This Summer I am serving as the Ambassador for the American Heart Association’s Go Red For Women BetterU 12 week program. Everything that I have done this Summer, every step that I have taken, both literally and figuratively, I have done so in the presence of my children. They are my support team, but they are also very much my audience, watching and internalizing the choices that I am making, whether I or they like it or not. What can I learn from that? Well, first and foremost I can learn that I am not alone. [Read more...]

Miss Lori week 6 Go Red BetterU Program: Dressed for spontaneous exercise

This Summer I am serving as the Ambassador for the American Heart Association’s Go Red For Women BetterU program. It just so happens that week 6 of the BetterU program is all about activity. I’m sitting on the floor of the University of Illinois Chicago gym with my notebook computer in my lap typing this post. My 9 year old daughter is here to participate in a volleyball clinic for the next two hours, and I am sitting on my butt typing on the computer. When did my World switch from active to inactive? When did my hands switch with my feet for most activated appendage?

Miss Lori, week 3 Go Red BetterU Program; just WALK

Walking. That’s all you have to do. It’s really that simple. That’s what I am learning this week in the American Heart Association Go Red For Women BetterU Program. This summer I am serving as their Ambassador. Having turned 40 last month my health is at the forefront of my mind. Now, with the help of the BetterU program it is also the forefront of my priority list. Which hasn’t been the case for a looooong time. (Come on, you know you are the same way!) Ok, so back to walking. According to my BetterU Program quiz this week all you need is 10 minutes of walking to begin to make a difference in your health.10 minutes! Hey, that’s not so scary. It’s actually doable. [Read more...]

Miss Lori wants you to Activate & Be Great on National Start Walking Day

Today is National Start Walking day. Nearly 67 percent of Americans are overweight and at risk for heart complications from a sedentary life. That’s why the American Heart Association is hoping to get everyone to walk at least 30 minutes today, and every day. Studies suggest that every hour you walk potentially adds two hours to your life. Not a bad return. Unfortunately it’s a yucky day here in Chicago, but I got out there anyway. I walked my giant dog in Ping Tom Park. It always feels good to get my body moving. It clears my mind and re-energizes my heart. We all can benefit from that. And it’s a perfect time to take those first steps towards better health. A study was just released yesterday saying that women could actually walk themselves away form a stroke with a regular walking plan. [Read more...]

Miss Lori gets heart smart with Kathy Kaehler and Healthy Ones

On my way to the market I met celebrity fitness trainer Kathy Kaehler! Well, that’s not exactly how it happened for me, but it did for many other people. For the last two months Kathy was on tour with Healthy Ones encouraging people to make smart choices for themselves and their families at the grocery store. The Healthy Ones street team was on hand with money saving coupons and recipe ideas, while Kathy put customers through their paces with her killer 5 minute circuit, (a great way to steal a workout out of our highly crowded days.)

I had a fantastic time working out with Kathy and I really took her suggestions to heart. One week after meeting with her I was in Southern Illinois shooting a commercial. There I was at 6am on a pier in “hurry up and wait” mode, when it hit me; thanks to Kathy I could make use of that downtime.
